Numerical Simulation of Tsunami Generation by the Potential Flank Collapse of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano

چکیده
We perform numerical simulations of wave generation by the potential flank collapse of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano (CVV; La Palma ,Canary Islands, Spain). Subaerial slide scenarios are first defined based on recent slope stability studies of CVV; the identified scenarios have smaller volumes than those proposed by Ward and Day (2001), in the pioneering work that triggered the interest of the research community for CVV. Simulations of tsunami sources are performed using the previously validated (Abadie et al., 2010) 3D incompressible multifluid Navier-Stokes model THETIS. Both 2D and 3D simulations (the latter using a cylindrical mesh) are performed, which investigate near field wave generation. Results show that a slide of 60-70 km would have very significant consequences, at least for la Palma and other surrounding islands. Far field waves (tsunamis) are simulated in the 2D horizontal, fully nonlinear and dispersive, Boussinesq model FUNWAVE, which is initialized with the 3D Navier-Stokes solution. Results of preliminary tests are shown in the paper and more results will be presented at the conference.

Numerical modeling of tsunami waves generated by the flank collapse of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano (La Palma, Canary Islands): Tsunami source and near field effects
[1] In this work, we study waves generated by the potential collapse of the west flank of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano (CVV; La Palma, Canary Island, Spain) through numerical simulations performed in two stages: (i) the initial slide motion and resulting free surface elevation are first calculated using a 3D Navier-Stokes model; (ii) generated waves are then input into a 2D (horizontal) Boussinesq ...
متن کاملCumbre Vieja Volcano -- Potential collapse and tsunami at La Palma, Canary Islands
Geological evidence suggests that during a future eruption, Cumbre Vieja Volcano on the Island of La Palma may experience a catastrophic failure of its west flank, dropping 150 to 500 km of rock into the sea. Using a geologically reasonable estimate of landslide motion, we model tsunami waves produced by such a collapse. Waves generated by the run-out of a 500 km (150 km) slide block at 100 m/s...
متن کاملInternal structure of the western flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, La Palma, Canary Islands, from land magnetotelluric imaging
[1] Large‐scale mass wasting is a natural part of the evolution of volcanic islands, where deformation and indications of flank instability, such as large‐scale faulting and seismic and aseismic slip are common. The Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands) provides an ideal setting to address fundamental questions about the structure, evolution and stability of island vol...
متن کاملModeling Tsunami Sources and Their Propagation in the Atlantic Ocean for Coastal Tsunami Hazard Assessments and Inundation Mapping along the U.S. East Coast
Numerical simulations are performed to develop tsunami inundation maps for the U.S. East Coast (USEC), as envelopes of surface elevations caused by the probable maximum tsunamis (PMTs) in the Atlantic Ocean basin. These PMTs are triggered by various sources, identified from historical records or hypothetical, including : (i) near-field submarine mass failures (SMF) on or near the continental sh...
متن کاملMechanical models of the 1975 Kalapana, Hawaii earthquake and tsunami
Our objective is to produce a mechanically realistic model for the 1975 Kalapana event that explains the overall deformation and geological evolution of the south flank of Kilauea, and reproduces most known earthquake and tsunami observations. To do this, we present a new structural interpretation of geological data from Kilauea, along with modeling of the tsunami using recent seismic analyses....
